Book Review: The Sky Is Everywhere - O Céu Está em Todo Lugar, Jandy Nelson

"Eu deveria estar de luto, não me apaixonando..."

Lennie toca clarinete, tem 17 anos e perdeu a irmã (Bailey) há 1 mês. A garota se fecha em um mundo dramático e cheio de poesias. Na pior fase de sua vida, conhece Joe Fontaine, um músico, (o significado dessa generalização "um músico" vocês entenderão se lerem o livro, o garoto toca tudo!) que morara toda sua infância em Paris, e retornara à sua pátria recentemente.

Dá pra perceber que Lennie é uma pessoa romântica, isso se aflora com a morte de sua irmã; o livro é repleto de poemas escritos por ela. Já ouvi dizer que nos momentos da dor, os poetas e músicos escrevem seus melhores poemas. É bem isso que acontece com ela.

"Que tipo de garota quer beijar todos os rapazes no meio de um funeral? Que tipo de garota quer agarrar um cara em uma árvore, depois de dar uns beijos no namorado da irmã (morta) na noite anterior? E, por falar nisso, que tipo de garota quer beijar o namorado da irmã?" (pág. 100)

O livro que começou entediante e preto-e-branco para mim, enfim, começa a mostrar suas cores. A história começa a se desenrolar no capítulo 12.

Verdade seja dita: não consegui me prender ao livro, a personalidade de Lennie não me agradou muito, o fato de ela ser egoísta e achar que só ela está sofrendo, de não olhar ao seu redor e perceber que não foi a única que perdeu um alguém querido. Mas, em contrapartida, é um livro digno de ser lido, pois retrata a forma como alguém reage diante da perda. Nem todos nós reagiríamos da mesma forma.

Ela se preocupa tanto com o quê a irmã mais velha estaria pensando que não se permite à felicidade, acha que isso seria um desrespeito com a morte da irmã.

Super interessante a mania que a garota adquire, escreve diálogos (poéticos) e ao invés de guardá-los, os joga por aí.

Lennie conhece a irmã morta ao longo do livro. E pior do que lidar com a morte dela, é lidar com o que nunca ouviria sua irmã dizer, coisas omitidas durante a vida, segredos.

Personagens principais:

Toby, o cara que faz com que Lennie sinta Bailey novamente por perto.

Joe, aquele apaixonante, que faz Lennie levitar, se apaixonar e esquecer da triste perda da irmã.

"... e em seguida nos beijamos indo tão longe no céu, que acho que nunca mais vamos voltar. Se alguém perguntar onde estamos, mande olhar para cima." (pág. 407)

Muito diferente de livros narrados, a história em primeira pessoa dá um toque super pessoal na história.

“I’m supposed to be grieving, not falling in love...”

Seventeen-year-old, Lennie, plays clarinet, she’s lost her sister, Bailey, about one month ago. This girl locks herself up into a dramatic world, full of poetry.

On the worst fase of her life, she met Joe Fontaine, a musician, (you’ll understand why I said “musician” as soon as you read the book, this boy knows how to play a lot of instruments!) he lived his whole childhood in Paris, and returned, recently, to his country, the US.

You’ll notice that Lennie is a romantic girl, she realizes it as her sister died; this book is all about poetry written by her. I heard a once that in the moments of pain, the musician and poets write their most impressive poems. That’s what happens to Lennie.

“What kind of girl wants to kiss every boy at a funeral, wants to maul a guy in a tree after making out with her (dead) sister's boyfriend the previous night?
Speaking of which, what kind of girl makes out with her sister's boyfriend at all?”

The truth be spoken: I couldn’t keep myself focused, Lennie’s personality didn’t please me so much, she is selfish and she thinks she’s the only one who’s suffering. She, not for a moment, looked around to see that her family also lost someone beloved. But, in contrast, it’s worth reading this book, because it represents the way one reacts to the loss. We do not all react the same way.

Lennie is always much worried about what her sister would have thought about her, and her happiness would be a disrespect to her sister’s death.

Interesting what she does throughout the history, she writes some dialogues she once had with her sister and instead of keeping them in safety, she throws them away, anywhere.

She learns to know her sister when she is already dead for a while. Worst than live without her loved one, is to live without hearing what one didn’t tell her, omitted things, secrets.

Toby helps her remember.

Joe lets her forget.

“…we’re kissing so far into the sky I don’t think we’re ever coming back. If anyone asks where we are, just tell them to look up.” (page 270)

Book Review: An Offer You Can't Refuse - Uma Proposta Irrecusável, Jill Mansell

O que uma garota tem a ver com... Uma Proposta Irrecusável?

É o que o livro nos conta!

Lola Malone, com 17 anos, namora o cara perfeito, Doug Tennant, de 18 anos. Tudo muito líndo, muito romântico, até que a mãe de Doug, a sra. Adele Tennant, oferece 10 mil libras para Lola, desde que ela aceite romper o relacionamento que tem com Doug.

A história corre muito rápido nos primeiros 2 capítulos do livro, e quando me dei conta, no 3° capítulo, Lola já havia aceitado a quantia de dinheiro que a sra. Tennant oferecera, rompido o relacionamento com o homem de seus sonhos e viajado para o exterior.

O intrigante dessa trama é que Lola só aceita o dinheiro por questões familiares, um tanto que peculiares. Precisando, ou não, da quantia, ela aceitou. Uma vez aceita, não poderia mais voltar à trás. A garota abre mão dos seus sonhos e, o engraçado, é que ela não conta pra ninguém a razão dessa repentina mudança de mente, a não ser para sua melhor amiga na época. Isso me faz desejar, incansavelmente, a cada página que lia, que ela contasse a razão de tê-lo feito, o que não acontece, não pelo menos até o último capítulo.

Por força maior do destino, o ex-casal volta a se encontrar, a história rola, junto com ela muitos risos e desejos de que eles voltem à estar juntos.

Lola é uma garota super otimista e engraçada, vale à pena mencionar que por diversas vezes a garota foi confundida com uma prostituta, pela sua maneira de se vestir, mas se saiu dessas situações com muito bom humor e até um emprego em uma dessas.

Que tipo de garota que você conhece ao receber uma bolada de dinheiro sai às compras, mas não para lojas de estilistas de moda famosos, e sim, para uma livraria? Pois é, esse é o tipo-personalidade de Lola!

Uma mãe sem noção para se vestir (Blythe), um padrasto que gasta todo seu dinheiro na jogatina (Alex), um pai charmoso (Nick), uma amiga descabeçada e desorganizada (Sally), um melhor amigo líndo e metódico (Gabe), todos fazem parte dessa história irrecusável. Cenário perfeito para a novela, a antiga, cinzenta e chuvosa, Londres. Vale à pena ler. Já disse até que vale à pena um filme do livro.

A autora é irreverente e sem rodeios à sua forma de escrever, o que nos prende intensamente à história, assuntos e mais assuntos surgem ao longo do livro, personagens vêm e vão, as páginas viram e quando você de dá conta, já está ali dentro, rindo, imaginando, vivendo, e torcendo para que Lola e Dougie terminem juntos.

São 56 capítulos, e quando o livro termina você fica com aquela vontade de que ele continuasse.

Lola Malone, 17 years old, dates that kind of perfect guy, Doug Tennant, who's 18 years old. Everything's quite beautiful and romantic until his mother, Mrs. Adele Tennant, offers her 10,000 GBP to break up with him.

The history runs up so fast in the first 2 chapters, and when I realized, in the third one, Lola had already accepted the money Mrs. Tennant had offered her, and broken up with the man of her dreams and traveled abroad.

What is intriguing about it, because Lola only accepts the money for some peculiar reasons, I mean, one and only peculiar reason. Well, whether she needed it or not, she got it, and once she got it there's no turning back. She refuses the dreams she once had, and the funny thing is that she doesn't tell anyone what she did, except for her best friend at that time. As I was reading it, I desired so much that she'd told someone, anyone, what she did and why she did it, but sadly it doesn't happen, not until the very last chapter.

But you know, we're talking about fate! The ex-couple meet each other again and guess what? The history goes on and on and I wanted so much they could be together again.

Lola is a super-optimistic and funny girl, and it's worth it to mention that for some times, she was, wrongly, taken for a prostitute, well, her clothes or even the way she put it all together, anyway.. She did it very well in this type of situation, and - believe you or not - found a job (in the bookstore of course) in one of them.

What kind of girl you know receiving a good deal of money, instead of spending it all on renowned fashion designers, spend it on a bookstore? That's right the kind of girl she is!

A cheesy mother (Blythe), a stepfather who spends all his money (the family money) in gaming (Alex), a charming father (Nick), a crazy and disorganized girl friend (Sally), her handsome and orderly friend (Gabe), each one of them are part of this history you can't refuse. London (couldn't be better) is the perfect setting for the novel, the old, gray and rainy London. It's worth reading. Someone, please, produce a film from the book!!

The author is outspoken, right to the point, it strongly binds us to the history; issues and more issues arise throughout the book, characters come and go, the pages vanish away and when you realize, you're already part of it, laughing at it, thinking of it, living it, and hoping that Lola and Dougie end up together.

There are 56 chapters, and when the book ends you wish there were more pages to read.
